Reflections on the Support for Refugee Families at North Belconnen Uniting Church

Refugee support was provided by North Belconnen Uniting Church from 1980 until 2004 through a period of varying attitudes by government towards refugees. This report discusses the families we helped and cultural issues we encountered. The arrival of a new family started a very intense but rewarding series of activities which are outlined. The report looks at the aspirations of the refugees and shows some of the outcomes for the families: the successes, the tragedies and the frustrations.

Church Policies

Safe Church Policy

We affirm that all people have the right to be emotionally, physically and spiritually safe and respected; and have their views and opinions valued at all times.

Our Safety and Protection Policy has been developed to help us live out our mission, especially in our ministries with vulnerable people and in acknowledgment of our own vulnerabilities, as well as to meet our responsibilities as part of the Uniting Church in Australia and under Australian legislation.

This Safety and Protection Policy applies to all staff members, church councillors, program leaders and helpers associated with the ministry in our church.

The Safe Church Policy is available here for download.

Marriage Equality

North Belconnen Uniting Church abides by the Australian Federal Marriage act and welcomes those who wish to marry in the church.

Covid-19

The church is required to comply with ACT Government restrictions and have a Safety Plan to guide all use of our facilities. The safety plan is available here for download.

Children Safety

As a result of the findings of the Royal Commission into the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, the Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia has released the National Child Safe Policy Framework 2019.

North Belconnen Uniting Church (NBUC) has a Safety and Protection Policy in place consistent with this framework to protect people participating in church activities.
